How a technical challenge at the 2026 NSTF South32 Awards became a reminder that experience, preparation and teamwork remain the most valuable assets in live event production.

Every live event production company prepares for the unexpected. Most of the time, those contingency plans remain exactly that. They never need to be used.

At the 2026 National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) South32 Awards, ours did.

Approximately one hour into the production, the live inter-venue broadcast link between Johannesburg and Cape Town became unstable. Intermittent packet loss began affecting the connection between the two venues, disrupting the live sharing of award presentations, acceptance speeches and key programme segments.

Our technicians immediately began investigating the issue, working closely with the Emperors Palace IT team while assessing every available option to restore a stable connection. As the situation developed, it became clear that restoring the connection at all costs was no longer the priority. Protecting our client's event was.

This is why the story isn't about an internet problem. It's about the people who ensured the production remained a success.

Twenty-Two Years of Trust

For M Productions, the NSTF South32 Awards are far more than another event on our calendar.

Since 2004, we have had the privilege of delivering the technical production for the NSTF South32 Awards. The 2026 event marked our twenty-second consecutive year of supporting one of South Africa's most prestigious celebrations of science, engineering, technology and innovation.

Over those twenty-two years, the production has continued to evolve, bringing greater technical complexity, higher expectations and increasingly ambitious production requirements.

For the past three consecutive years, that evolution has included connecting gala events in Johannesburg and Cape Town into a single hybrid production. Awards presented in either city were broadcast live to the other venue, allowing guests in Johannesburg and Cape Town to share the same celebration in real time. Acceptance speeches and key programme segments were also carried live between both venues, creating a seamless experience despite the geographical separation.

Productions of this scale are never built on technology alone. They are built on careful planning, thorough preparation and experienced technicians who understand that success is measured not only by what happens when everything works perfectly, but by how a team responds when it doesn't.

When Experience Takes Over

As soon as the instability was identified, our technical team began investigating the cause while working alongside the Emperors Palace IT team. Together, we assessed the available network infrastructure, introduced additional connectivity options and explored every reasonable opportunity to maintain a stable live inter-venue broadcast link between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Following the event, reports of a fibre break and broader network outages affecting services in parts of South Africa began to emerge.

Despite every effort, the connection continued to behave unpredictably.

Rather than allowing an unreliable connection to compromise the remainder of the production, the decision was made to implement our contingency plan. The live inter-venue broadcast link between Johannesburg and Cape Town was intentionally disconnected, allowing both venues to continue independently.

It wasn't the outcome anyone had hoped for. It was, however, the right decision for the event. The awards continued successfully, and the evening achieved exactly what it had been designed to do, celebrate South Africa's brightest scientific minds.

There were no egos, no blame and no panic. There was simply a shared commitment to delivering the best possible outcome for our client.
