Transforming Batoka Gorge Zambia into a Natural Laser Canvas

Some projects are memorable because of their scale. Others because of their location. Every now and then, a project comes along that combines both.

In June 2026, M Productions successfully delivered its first laser production in Zambia, transforming the dramatic landscape of Batoka Gorge into a breathtaking natural canvas for an exclusive gala dinner attended by approximately 250 guests.

Set against one of Africa's most spectacular natural backdrops, guests were escorted to the edge of the gorge as darkness settled over the Zambezi Valley. Awaiting them was a five-minute cinematic laser experience designed to build anticipation and set the tone for an unforgettable evening beneath the African night sky.

Unlike traditional outdoor laser shows that use the sky as their backdrop, this production utilised the gorge itself. High-powered laser effects were projected across the vast ravine, illuminating the rock faces and surrounding vegetation to create a visual experience that appeared woven directly into the landscape.

At the heart of the production were three 45W RGB entertainment laser systems, among the most powerful entertainment laser systems ever operated in Zambia. The result was a show that could be seen stretching across the gorge, creating a level of scale that would have been impossible in a conventional venue environment.

While the audience experienced five minutes of seamless entertainment, months of planning took place behind the scenes. One of the greatest challenges was transporting the specialised equipment from South Africa into Zambia. The laser systems were shipped via dedicated air cargo, requiring temporary import and export procedures, detailed logistics planning and close coordination with multiple service providers.

The remote location added another layer of complexity. Batoka Gorge offers incredible natural beauty, but presents unique challenges when deploying advanced production technology. From power and infrastructure considerations to equipment protection and safety management, every aspect of the project required careful planning and execution.

To minimise risk, the M Productions team arrived in Zambia ahead of the event, with contingency plans in place should any logistical issues arise. Fortunately, the transportation process ran smoothly, allowing the team to focus entirely on delivering the experience.

The show itself was programmed through a collaboration between Tiaan Giliomee and Marisa van der Westhuizen, with Marisa operating the production on site. Marius van Rooyen served as the project's Laser Safety Officer, ensuring that all aspects of the production were conducted according to the highest safety standards.

As the final sequence concluded, the reaction from the audience left no doubt that the effort had been worthwhile. The gorge echoed with cheering and applause as guests witnessed a production unlike anything they had experienced before.

For M Productions, the project represents far more than a successful international deployment. It stands as a milestone achievement, combining complex logistics, technical excellence and creative storytelling in one of the most unique event locations in Africa.

Most importantly, it demonstrates that world-class laser productions are not limited to traditional venues. With the right planning, expertise and vision, even a natural wonder such as Batoka Gorge can become a stage.
